SUMMARY:Spiegelungen I: Geometrien
DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, Ensemble NAMES – New Art and Music Ensemble Salzburg and Schallfeld Ensemble join forces in a special collaboration: a project for double ensemble featuring two world premieres written for the occasion. \nOn stage\, the two ensembles face one another in a symmetrical\, mirror-like configuration\, using spatial and non-spatial structures alike as points of departure for sonic\, relational\, and performative explorations. \nThe program consists of two world premieres. Filippo Perocco’s new work engages with fragments\, remnants\, and moments of precariousness. Drawing on Robert Schumann’s letters from Endenich\, the composition traces a movement toward a “zero point\,” where what remains comes as close as possible to a musical essence. The second premiere is a multimedia composition by Sara Stevanović\, exploring concepts such as similarity\, correspondence\, and the idea of an ideally balanced equilibrium on a musical level.

SUMMARY:Opera Now: Reflex
DESCRIPTION:…they thought they were watching signals\, shaped carefully\, slowed down so you wouldn’t question their source — moved like you expected\, because we had rehearsed this expectation. And when the frame shifted back\, even when it wasn’t there\, even when nothing was there\, it struck the surface as weight\, bent\, adjusted\, to show how easily you can hold meaning where there is none. Now everything has turned back to you again\, now that nothing explains itself\, but you still can name it if you look backwards… \nAntonis Rouvelas (GRE/AT) | Komposition\, Video\,\nLichtdesign\, Inszenirung\nHelena Sorokina (LV/AT) | Gesang\nCaroline Mayrhofer (AT) | Blockflöte\nElena Gabbrielli (IT/AT) | Flöte\nGerald Preinfalk (AT) | Saxophon\nDavid Schmidt (AT) | Trompete\nNassos Ioannou (GRE/AT) | Horn\nPablo Marin-Reyes (GT/AT) | Posaune\nGeorge Lolas (MK/AT) | Akkordeon\nDimitrios Polisoidis (GRE/AT) | Bratsche\nAnna Grenzner (ESP/AT) | Cello\nLorenzo Derinni (IT/AT) | Geige\nPhilipp Kienberger (AT) | Kontrabass\nLeonhard Garms (IT/AT) | Dirigent\nDavide Gagliardi (IT/AT) | Klangregie\nAlisa Kobzar (UKR/AT) | Video Operator

SUMMARY:Saison 2025 KORPUS III: SKIN
DESCRIPTION:On 24 May\, Schallfeld will perform SKIN\, the third concert of its 2025 KORPUS season. \nUnder the title SKIN\, things get musically intimate as we present music that literally gets under your skin in a poetic\, metaphorical and sensual way. In addition to two world premieres by Luca Guidarini (Styrian Artist in Residence 2025) and Andrés Gutiérrez Martínez (Grain\, 2017 – new version 2025)\, which delve into organic worlds of sound\,\nwe dedicate ourselves to the magnum opus ‘Skin’ by the renowned British composer Rebecca Saunders (Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2019). Ensemble Schallfeld will be accompanied by soprano Juliet Fraser\, for whom this work was composed.

DESCRIPTION:Claudio Panariello To learn the obscene art of suffering pain\, for flute\, clarinet\, saxophone\, percussion\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello\, double bass\, electronics (2022) \nCarola Bauckholt Keil\, for flute\, clarinet\, percussion\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello\, double bass (2000) \nChristophe Bertrand Madrigal\, for soprano\, flute\, clarinet\, percussion\, piano\, violin\, cello (2005) \nMisato Mochizuki Voilages\, for flute\, clarinet\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello (2000) \nAlexander Khubeev don’t leave the room\, for performer\, flute\, clarinet\, trombone\, percussion\, piano\, violin\, cello\, electronics\, live-video (2020)* \n\nHaving been connected to impuls in various ways over the years\, Graz based Schallfeld Ensemble presents its first concert of the 2025 season – dedicated to „Body“ as main theme – within the impuls Festival. Starting with the experience of pain (and confrontation with hybridity\, otherness and detachment) in Panariello´s work\, the program clashes into the hyperbolic description of Gargantua’s gigantic body (Bertrand) and finally arrives at Khubeev’s paradoxical musical investigation of the body as a linguistic medium. Just like in former years\, with Carola Bauckholt and Misato Mochizuki two renowned composers teaching at the impuls Academy\, are included in the program\, opening up the possibility to work and exchange closely with them. \n\nSchallfeld Ensemble \nElisa Azzarà flutes \nSzilárd Benes clarinets \nDiego García Pliego saxophones \nPablo Marin-Reyes trombone \nMaria Flavia Cerrato piano \nManuel Alcaraz Clemente (solo*) percussion \nSimon Klavžar percussion \nLorenzo Derinni violin \nFrancesca Piccioni viola \nMyriam García Fidalgo cello \nMargarethe Maierhofer-Lischka double bass \n  \nAnnette Schönmüller voice \nDavide Gagliardi sound design\, live-electronics \nLeonhard Garms conductor

SUMMARY:Alive – NOW! Oper der Gegenwart
DESCRIPTION:Sinan Samanli (TUR/AT) | Komposition\, Oud\nAlisa Kobzar (UKR/AT) | Klangkunst\, Live Audio-Visual\nAntonis Rouvelas (GRE/AT) | Lichtdesign\nmit Schallfeld Ensemble \n\nDie Handlung von Alive basiert auf dem philosophischen Roman Hayy ibn Yaqzan des arabisch-andalusischen Universalgelehrten Ibn Tufail aus dem 12.

DESCRIPTION:Beat Furrer – intorno al bianco \nKatherina Klement – Monde II – Fortschreibung (WP) \nSehyung Kim – NN (WP) \nCarlo Elia Praderio – Dune (WP) \n  \nSchallfeld Ensemble misses the acoustic connections to the physical world. Carlo Elia Praderio calls his new work Dune. For him\, the gradual transitions from solo instrument to ensemble in this acoustic “dune” are metaphors for climate change: small changes with big effects. \nKatharina Klement also relates individuals and space: in Monde II\, she uses the sounds of concrete mixers filled with different materials such as sand or wood. She transfers the resulting loops into a circular spatial concept\, analogous to the model of several moons that individually circle to form an open whole\, thus creating a coherent monde (world). \nBeat Furrer’s Intorno al bianco for clarinet and string quartet is also about communication between the ensemble and the individual. Sehyung Kim sets nine instruments in relation to live electronics and the theme of plastic. \n  \nThe compositions by Sehyung Kim and Katharina Klement are commissioned by ORF musikprotokoll. The composition by Carlo Elia Praderio is a commission by Schallfeld Ensemble\, part of a series of new works that Schallfeld was able to commission thanks to the Province of Styria’s Großer Interpretationspreis 2022.

SUMMARY:Eröffnungskonzert impuls Festival
DESCRIPTION:A festival is by definition a time of celebration\, and there are many things we want to celebrate in the program of the Opening Concert of the 8th Edition of the impuls Festival: on the occasion of his 80th birthday\, we pay homage to Brian Ferneyhough\, and welcome Francesco Filidei and Francesca Verunelli\, who are tutoring at the impuls Academy for the first time. \nCertainly there is\, of course\, the new works: the Austrian premiere of an Ulysses Network commission to Elena Rykova and a new composition by Dmitri Kourliandksi\, created especially for Ensemble Schallfeld to be premiered at impuls 2023; and finally\, we also celebrate Schallfeld’s fifth participation in impuls during the tenth anniversary year of the ensemble. \nThe common thread of this program is the inspiration from extra-musical elements: Whether it is a historical painting (as in “La Chute d’Icare”)\, or the illusion of movement created by static images (as in “Cinemaolio”)\, a poem by Eduardo Sanguineti (in the case of “Finito Ogni Gesto”)\, or places\, lonely inner places in the case of Rykova\, or quite real and quite crowded ones in the case of Kourliandski. Through ekphrasis or synesthesia\, the music always seems to act as a metaphorical space. Therefore\, the score itself lends itself to becoming an abstract place that can be (re)written\, measured\, or “inhabited”. \nPROGRAM\nBrian Ferneyhough La Chute d’Icare\, for mixed Ensemble (1988)* \nDmitri Kourliandski Banlieue\, for flute\, clarinet\, accordion\, violin\, viola\, cello\, double bass\, live-electronics (2023\, world premiere)** \nFrancesco Filidei Finito Ogni Gesto\, for flute\, clarinet\, horn\, percussion\, violin\, cello (2010) \nElena Rykova In the Presence of Absence\, for clarinet\, accordion\, piano\, violin\, cello\, amplification\, electronics (2022\, Austrian premiere) \nFrancesca Verunelli Cinemaolio\, for flute\, clarinet\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello (2014) \n\n\n—\n\n\n\n\n\nElisa Azzarà flutes | \nSzilárd Benes clarinet* | \nPéter Szűcs clarinets | \nHelene Kenyeri oboe | \nPetrean Radu horn | \nMirko Jevtović accordion | \nManuel Alcaraz Clemente percussion | \nPatrick Skrilecz piano | \nLorenzo Derinni violin | \nPaolo Fumagalli viola | \nMyriam García Fidalgo cello | \nFrantišek Výrostko double bass \nDavide Gagliardi sound design\, live electronics \nDmitri Kourliandski live-lectronics** \nLeonhard Garms conductor

SUMMARY:Filidei/Pommerat: L'Inondation - Grand Theatre du Luxembourg
DESCRIPTION:Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg \nOrchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg \nWriter-director Joël Pommerat contributes his first ever libretto to this family tragedy in two acts\, based on a 1929 short story by Evgueni Zamiatine. The fate of a childless couple who take in an orphan is played out on a multi-storey set: one flat above another\, where similar lives are led. Filidei and Pommerat (also responsible for staging) collaborated closely to create this contemporary vision of outer ordinariness that belies the inner turmoil. Under Leonhard Garms\, the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg deliver a haunting score by Francesco Filidei. \nhttps://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.wort.lu/kultur/hochwasser-und-harte-konflikte-im-grand-theatre/1527594.html&ved=2ahUKEwjqieOMzeyRAxVS8LsIHZFoC1wQFnoECBsQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1AL8XTbSCueTXv1PWaWgbH

SUMMARY:L'inondation - Opéra Comique Paris
DESCRIPTION:Francesco Filidei | Joël Pommerat \nA childless couple adopts an orphan girl. The teenager unexpectedly whisks her way into their home and their hearts. \nHusband and wife hardly speak to each other. Silence\, torn apart by the laughter of neighbouring families\, has become unbearable. Overwhelmed with a strong feeling of guilt\, the woman has built herself an inner world that becomes disrupted as the end of winter sees the river’s waters rise. \nBack in 2019\, at the invitation of the Opéra Comique\, Joël Pommerat wrote his first libretto\, adapting a short story by Zamiatine originally published in 1929.\nThe stage writer continuously shared the development of the speech and timing of the scenes with composer Francesco Filidei who was conceiving his second opera for the occasion. Their close collaboration\, their tandem in collusion with the musicians and singers\, gave birth to an operatic creation of a new verve\, capable of expressing the muffled density of the soul. \nThis memorable score of sounds and images staged by Joël Pommerat returns to the Opéra Comique\, with Leonard Garms conducting the intense and vibrant performers. \nOpera in two acts based on the eponymous text written by Evgueni Zamiatine. Created at the Opéra Comique in 2019. \nMusical direction\, Leonhard Garms • Stage direction\, Joël Pommerat • Artistic collaboration Valérie Nègre • With Chloé Briot\, Jean-Christophe Lanièce\, Norma Nahoun\, Pauline Hurietcyr\, Enguerrand de Hys\, Victoire Bunel\, Guilhem Terrail\, Tomislav Lavoie\, la Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique • Orchestra de Chambre du Luxembourg \nhttps://operawire.com/opera-comique-2023-review-linondation-filidei/ \n https://www.facebook.com/TheatreDeLOperaComique/videos/1195827617706549/

SUMMARY:The new normal
DESCRIPTION:Programm\nWilliam Dougherty The new normal \nMilica Djordjevic Rdja \nClaudio Panariello To Learn the Obscene Art of Suffering Pain \nEnsemble Kompositionsauftrag des Schallfeld Ensembles im Rahmen des StAiR (Styrian artist in residence) Programmes 2022 des Landes Steiermark \nMisato Mochizuki Chimera \n  \nAt the end of 2021\, when we conceived our 2022 season\, we wanted to focus on an optimistic (but still critical) reflection about the consequences of two years of pandemic in our lives and in the way we experience music together. \nSince February 2022\, the war and many other changes in the world gave a new and unexpected turn to the topics we choose for our concerts (Debris\, Nahe). \nIn our mind\, “The New Normal” stays probably  more close to its original meaning of a reunion to urgent socio-political and existential topics that we might have forgotten or recontextualized during the pandemic as in the last months. \nThe piece “the new normal” by William Daugherty reminds us about social inequality (on a world scale as in his own country\, the USA)\, choosing a direct impact to the audience – however filtered through a calibrated work of collage from ethnomusicological material\, ancient music quotations and other samples. \nMoving from apparently objective scientific phenomena (oxidation and hybridation)\, the works by Milica Djordjevic and Misato Mochizuki bring us respectively to our “rusty”\,  jammed aptitude in the expression of  feelings as to alienating and extraneous processes of transformation. \nClaudio Panariello’s work (Styrian artist in residency 2022) mediates between the innest existential reflection about the experience of pain and its possible narrativity in our society\, which seem to mirror in the “impossible” antiphonal dialogue between a (human) instrumental ensemble and its analogic Doppelgänger – a feedback system driven by piezos microphones and loudspeakers.
